Southern Decadence, New Orleans- Kimpton Hotel Fontenot…Best In NOLA!
Southern Decadence had humble beginnings in 1972 when a close-knit group of friends, known as the "Decadents," organized a costume party as a playful farewell to Michael Evers, who was leaving New Orleans. What started as a simple going-away party has evolved into one of our world's major annual gay events and the fifth largest annual event in the City of New Orleans, exceeded only by Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Essence Festival, and French Quarter Festival.
You can see people wearing all different types of things during Southern Decadence. Some people wear costumes, some a leather harness, some street clothes and anything in between. The festival embraces people of all backgrounds, genders, races, and sexual orientations, embodying the inclusive spirit of New Orleans.
There are literally hundreds of events happening during the week, including drag shows, pool parties, dance events, and performances by famous DJs from around the world. Special events for 2025 include a pool party starring RuPaul's Drag Race winner Sasha Colby at Virgin Hotels New Orleans.
Southern Decadence isn't just a party—it's a celebration of freedom, acceptance, and the vibrant spirit that makes New Orleans one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in America. Whether you're part of the community or an ally, this Labor Day weekend promises unforgettable memories in the most magical city in the South!
Accomadations at Hotel Fontenot a Kimpton Hotel
With all the incredible experiences that draw me to New Orleans, I equally anticipate my stays at the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot. Since discovering this gem when it opened in 2021, I've returned four times, and each visit reinforces why it's become my essential New Orleans sanctuary.
The location strikes the perfect balance—close enough to feel the city's pulse with just a 20-minute stroll to Bourbon Street's electric energy, yet far enough away to offer a peaceful retreat when the night winds down. After hours of jazz clubs, amazing meals, and wandering through the Quarter's historic streets, returning to this tranquil haven feels like stepping into a different world.
The staff embodies everything wonderful about Southern hospitality. Their genuine warmth and attentiveness never feel forced or scripted—it's that authentic Louisiana charm that makes you feel like family from the moment you arrive.
But what truly sets this hotel apart are the heavenly bed linens. I'm convinced their sheets are washed with some kind of magic because the instant my head hits the pillow, I'm transported to the most blissful sleep. After full days exploring New Orleans' vibrant culture and late nights enjoying the city's legendary nightlife, sinking into those impossibly soft sheets feels like floating on a cloud.
The Kimpton Hotel Fontenot isn't just accommodation—it's an integral part of my New Orleans experience, providing the perfect counterbalance to the city's exhilarating chaos.
