Luxury Perfected: The Regent Hong Kong Lives Up to Its World-Class Reputation
For years, the Regent Hong Kong has held a coveted spot among the world's top 10 hotels, and it's been on my bucket list for just as long. During my brief two-night stay in Hong Kong, I made the bold decision to split my time between two exceptional properties—the brand-new Kimpton Tsim Sha Tsui and the legendary Regent. After my wonderful experience at the Kimpton, I knew I had to seize this rare opportunity to finally experience what makes the Regent one of the most celebrated hotels in the world.
A Welcome That Sets the Standard
The Regent sits just a quick walk across the street from the Kimpton, but the experience is entirely different. Where the Kimpton offered elevated city views, the Regent places you eye-level with the stunning waters of Victoria Harbour—an intimate perspective that makes you feel connected to Hong Kong's maritime heartbeat.
Arriving on foot without a car, I wasn't sure what kind of welcome to expect. Any concerns vanished the moment I approached the front entrance and its beautiful welcoming water fountains. A doorman immediately spotted me and ran over to assist with the luggage I was rolling behind me. His warm, cheerful demeanor instantly conveyed the level of service I'd hoped for from such a highly-rated property.
But here's where the Regent's attention to detail truly shines: He didn't just take my bags and point me toward the lobby. He personally escorted me inside and joined me in the check-in queue. As we waited together, he engaged me in natural conversation—asking about my stay, my travels, and genuinely getting to know me. His approach was so smooth and authentic that I didn't realize what he was doing until later: gathering personal details to relay to the front desk agent, ensuring my check-in would be seamlessly personalized.
The Art of Anticipatory Service
When we reached the front desk, the agent greeted me by name and immediately acknowledged my status. She asked only to quickly verify my passport, keeping the formalities brief. What happened next exemplifies why the Regent consistently ranks among the world's finest hotels.
Rather than completing check-in at the desk, she invited me to meet her at the end of the counter. "I'm going to escort you up to your room so we can finish the check-in process there," she explained. "That way you can have a seat, relax, and get to know your space."
Upon entering my room, I found a cold bottle of Evian water already waiting at the table with a glass. As she poured me a refreshing glass of water, she walked me through the room's amenities and hotel information in a conversational, unhurried manner. We signed the check-in documents on an iPad—modern efficiency meets old-world hospitality—and then she warmly wished me well, asking if there was anything missing from the room that she could provide.
I mentioned how much I loved the huge bathtub and appreciated the bath salts provided, adding that I'd probably love some more. Within five minutes of her departure, not only did my luggage arrive, but the bellman asked if I'd like him to unpack for me. I politely declined, but it's this kind of service—genuine, thoughtful, anticipatory—that you rarely experience anymore, even at five-diamond properties.
An Urban Oasis with Harbor Views
After freshening up, I set out to explore the rest of the hotel, starting with the pool area. The Regent has created a beautiful sanctuary here: a pristine pool surrounded by trees and lush greenery that transforms this space into a true oasis amid Hong Kong's urban energy.
What truly impressed me were the hot and cold plunge pools, each featuring glass walls that frame stunning views of the boats gliding by on the harbour. I could have sat at those hot pools for hours, mesmerized by the passing vessels and the ever-changing waterfront tableau. It's this thoughtful integration of Hong Kong's unique waterfront setting into every aspect of the guest experience that elevates the Regent beyond mere luxury into something more memorable and meaningful.
Before getting too comfortable, I wanted to check out the gym—you know, just in case I thought I might want a quick workout (not that I've been in a gym in forever). The fitness center is spacious and immaculately maintained, and an attentive attendant immediately greeted me, offering assistance with everything from equipment orientation to arranging a private yoga class. Even if you never set foot on a treadmill, it's reassuring to know that level of personalized service extends to every corner of the property.
Award-Winning Afternoon Tea and Unexpected Culinary Delights
After exploring the wellness facilities, it was time for lunch. The Regent offers numerous luxury dining options, but I decided to indulge in their award-winning Afternoon Tea at the lobby-level restaurant—a nod to Hong Kong's British colonial heritage with a contemporary twist.
It was absolutely worth it. Beautiful freshly-baked scones arrived warm and perfect, followed by delectable, artistically-presented tea sandwiches, and finally, grand, stunning pastry desserts that were almost too beautiful to eat. I paired mine with a jasmine tea and a unique cocktail, savoring every moment of this quintessentially Hong Kong experience.
What makes this restaurant even more intriguing is its unexpected partnership with Shake Shack, bringing elevated menu items like Foie Gras Shack burgers and caviar fries to the table. It's this playful juxtaposition of high and low, East and West, tradition and innovation, that captures Hong Kong's dining scene perfectly.
A Gesture That Touched My Heart
After such a relaxing lunch, I headed back to my room for a little rest. When I opened the door, I was completely blown away by a thoughtful amenity that had been left for me. What made it truly extraordinary was a hand-painted card featuring my dear Koda, my French Bulldog who had passed away just two nights before.
In that moment, I understood why the Regent consistently ranks among the world's finest hotels. This wasn't just service—it was genuine care. They had taken the time to learn about my loss and created something so personal and meaningful that it brought tears to my eyes. The staff had gone so far above and beyond to make me feel cared for that I honestly didn't want to leave the room.
The turndown service had already been completed, and what the Regent describes as their bed is genuinely the best I've slept in during all my travels. Lying there, watching the boats glide across the bay and the buildings shimmer across the water, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude. Sometimes luxury isn't about thread counts or marble bathrooms—it's about being seen, being cared for, and feeling at home halfway around the world.
A Breakfast Experience to Remember
Waking up the next morning, I was eager to experience yet another one of the Regent's many onsite restaurants. Breakfast did not disappoint—in fact, it ranks among the largest and most impressive breakfast buffets I've ever encountered.
The spread was extraordinary in its variety and quality. There were homemade pastries celebrating local Hong Kong culture, American-style traditional favorites, but it was the local Hong Kong section that truly captivated me. So extensive and amazing, I had to try almost everything. You could create your own homemade noodle bowls with an assortment of accompaniments, enjoy delicious fried wontons, sample stir-fried noodles and rice, or indulge in anything else your mind and heart were craving.
But I absolutely have to mention the fresh watermelon juice. Both here at the Regent and at the Kimpton, the watermelon juice was some of the best fresh juice I've ever had. I genuinely wish I could have taken a gallon of it back to my room to enjoy for the remainder of the day. It's these simple pleasures—perfectly executed—that elevate an already exceptional experience into something unforgettable.
The Regent Hong Kong doesn't just meet expectations—it anticipates them and exceeds them in ways that stay with you long after checkout. From the doorman who made me feel like a VIP to the hand-painted card honoring Koda, from the harbor-view plunge pools to that incredible watermelon juice, every detail demonstrated why this property has earned its place among the world's finest hotels. This is hospitality as an art form, where service isn't just attentive but genuinely intuitive and deeply human.
